Vaccination July 27, 2010

Vaccination is hailed as one of the most successful medical intervention in history, as well as the most important thing a parent can do to make a child healthy. Parents are told that vaccines are very safe, so rarely causing adverse reactions that it’s hard to even know if they ever do. Parents with concerns about vaccines are shunned as neglectful, conspiracy theorists and anti-authority. Many innately have caution towards the issue, but they are pat on the back assuredly and told their children won’t be able to attend school, so they might as well get them vaccinated now.

Are all vaccines safe?

Are all vaccines effective?

Are all vaccines necessary?

Do I have a CHOICE?

What do you assume to be true about vaccines? Maybe that they are the greatest advancement in medicine; how about that they are completely necessary to have a healthy child or that they are certainly safe and extremely effective.

I challenge you to set aside ALL of your assumptions about vaccines- and this time before you believe any of them to be true- look for hard and fast proof. Maybe you will find that your thoughts about vaccines were based on fact…or you might come to find the contrary to be true.

The concept of safety for vaccines is much different than the concept of safety as applied to many other things.  Vaccines are given to healthy people; our goal should always been 100% safety.

-John Robbins, MD

There are several potential safety issues involved in the creation, testing, licensing, manufacturing and use of vaccines. Here is a quick summary of a few of the issues.

• DEFINITION:  An inactive substance or preparation used as a control in an experiment or test to determine the effectiveness of a medicinal drug.  (SOURCE)

Vaccines have not been proven safe by the same standard other drugs have been. The placebo in vaccine trials are other vaccines.

SOURCE: Tennpenny, Dr. Sherri. Saying No To Vaccines. Cleveland, Ohio: NMA Media Press, 2008. (26)

How is the true safety profile of a particular vaccine ever really known if getting it is not compared to NOT getting it?

Some “shot visits” a child can receive up to 13 different vaccinations. (SOURCE) When vaccines are tested for safety they do not need to be tested to see if they are safe when given with any other shot. (SOURCE)

How do we know if giving multiple vaccines is safe if it is not tested comparing it to giving just one?

Long-term safety studies are not required by the government to get a vaccine licensed, nor are they done by pharmaceutical companies. (SOURCE)

Clinical trials to get a vaccine “licensed” are for short durations.

The hepatitis B vaccine trial followed the participants for 4 days to watch for “long-term” reactions.

“Health officials consider a vaccine to be safe if no bad reactions — like seizures, intestinal obstruction or anaphylaxis — occur acutely. The CDC has not done any studies to assess the long-term effects of its immunization schedule. To do that, one must conduct a randomized controlled trial, the lynchpin of evidenced-based medicine, where one group of children is vaccinated on the CDC’s schedule and a control group is not vaccinated.”  Donald W. Miller, Jr., MD

“Live” vaccines can inadvertently contain DNA from stray viruses. This can happen during manufacturing and is often not detected until the vaccine has been administered to countless numbers of children.

“Viruses can only be detected in vaccines if researchers know what they are trying to find.”

(Neustaedter, Dr. Randall. The Vaccine Guide. Berkeley, California: North Atlantic Books, 2002.)

Example: The FDA temporarily “suspended” use of GlaxoSmithKline’s Rotarix (an oral vaccine for Rotavirus) on March 22, 2010 due to contamination by large amounts of a pig virus in all lots. This virus was not known to cause disease in pigs, but that does not mean it could not it humans.  On May 7th, 2010, the recommendation to refrain from using the vaccine was withdrawn, while IRONICALLY it was revealed that Merck’s Rotateq vaccine (another oral vaccine for Rotavirus) contained a pig virus that is deadly in pigs. Neither of these vaccines have been recalled from the market, and everyday thousands and thousands of children are receiving vaccines with known contamination of pig viruses, one that causes baby pigs to have respiratory, kidney, reproductive and brain damage, wasting away before they die. Some of the things found in vaccines: (some known to be harmful to the body, others not yet clear-experimental)

Human albumin, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum sulfate, ammonium sulfate, aluminum phosphate, bovine (cow) products (including blood), disodium phosphate, DNA from animal cells, egg, chicken products, formaldehyde (carcinogen), formalin, phenol (anti-freeze), MSG, sodium borate (borax), 2-phenoxyethanol, thimerosal(mercury), yeast, alcohol, diethyl- phthalate, beta-propiolactone, aspartame, polysorbate 20 & 80, latex, human diploid cells, human cell line, mouse brain cells, various antibiotics, dog kidney cells, chinese hamster ovary cells, african green monkey kidney cells…  (SOURCE)

It is important to be educated on both the disease and the vaccine. Some parents choose to evaluate the necessity of each individual vaccine based on questions such as:

What is the risk of my child contracting the disease?

What happens if my child contracts the disease?

What are the likelihood of complications?

What is the treatment?

What is the mortality rate?

What is the safety of each individual vaccine?

  Vaccination Contract Illness
Prediction Are there ways to predict if my child will have a serious reaction to a vaccine? Are there ways to predict what vaccine-preventable diseases my child is likely to contract?
Prevention Can I prevent a vaccine reaction from occurring in my child?   What steps can I take to prevent my child from being exposed to vaccine preventable disease?
Proactive What steps can I take to ensure my child will not have a reaction, and the vaccine is effective?   Are there things I can do to support my child’s immune system, so they can better combat illness?
Post What can be done to repair damage from any adverse reactions to vaccines? What diseases are treatable?  If they are not, what can I do to help my child recover?
